Whether on ice or on the softball diamond, Kathleen (Mason) Barry was a mainstay of Williston athletic programs in the mid-90s. A six-time letter winner in softball and a five-time letter winner in hockey—then a record for the program— she stayed busy all three seasons. In softball, Kathy was a shutdown pitcher, twirling multiple no-hitters and one-hitters in her Wildcat career. She was dominant and a central part of the softball programs success. Her athleticism on the mound was undeniable and competing teams and coaches took note. Because of this, she added multiple All-League Team selections to her resume. Kathy learned to pitch here at Williston, growing from the most improved player to the most valuable player by graduation. Of note, she earned MVP three times and led the team as a captain for two softball seasons. On the ice, Kathy competed for four years and she served as captain in her senior season. Her hockey teammates recognized her with the team sportsmanship award as well. In addition to softball and hockey, Kathy earned two varsity letters playing field hockey in the fall, proving that her stick skills on the ice translated to competing on grass. As a senior, Kathy was recognized as the most outstanding female athlete and she was honored with the Alumnae Award. When asked about her time here, Kathy remembers some of the details about her play on the field, but what she remembered most was how supported she felt, noting the impact of coaches like Estey Ticknor in hockey and Sue Barnett, Peter Gunn, and Jen Fulcher in softball. In turn, Coach Jen Fulcher shared that “coaching Kathy was a joy and honor. She was always ready to compete and strive for excellence. She was one of those athletes who could be an intense competitor and also be joking on the bench to lift her teammates”. Kathy’s achievements, leadership and sportsmanship stand out during a decade that saw other Hall of Fame careers and teams . For all these reasons we are pleased to induct Kathleen Mason Barry into the Williston Athletic Hall of Fame.
