The Williston Northampton boys basketball program has a long and storied tradition dating back to 1898. The team competes at the Class A level in NEPSAC, a nationally recognized league that combines strong academics with highly competitive athletics. The team has enjoyed tremendous success over the years including in 2015 and 2016 when Williston was crowned NEPSAC Class A champions. The core of the team is made up of boys who participate in the program for more than one year. Each year, this group is complemented by a small group of post-graduates. Williston’s basketball program fields four teams seeking to provide a quality basketball experience for boys at each level. Williston is proud of the fact that a number of our graduates go on to compete at the collegiate level. Williston plays in one of the finest facilities in New England. Our basketball players strive to be great representatives of Williston while working hard on and off the court.

The Wildcats went on the road to play an undefeated K-O team and unfortunately came out on the losing end 53-32. K-O was an outstanding team defensively and offensively. Despite cutting the lead to 8 early the second half, the Wildcats couldn't close the gap more. Daniel Zhang, Will Vachet (Belchertown), and Will Chalfant (Northampton) led the way with 6 points each. Tate Cowperthwait (Leeds), Andrew Yu-Hwang, and Jaxon Axelman played great games. The Wildcats finished 14-1 on the season. Despite the season ending loss, it was an outstanding season!
The Wildcats traveled to Westminster and played an all-around great game in route to a 58-23 victory. The team defense was stifling as usual and shots were falling on offense. Max Kellogg (Amherst), Jacob Waah (Holyoke), Tate Cowperthwait (Leeds), Will Chalfant (Northampton), and Connor Capshaw (Southampton) all hit one or more threes to highlight some great shooting. Overall, 12 players scored with Will Vachet (Belchertown) and Waah leading the way with 15 and 8 points, respectively. Jack Mettey (Easthampton), Chalfant, and Kellogg each had multiple steals to lead the outstanding effort on defense. Another great team victory!
The Wildcats won a nail-biter 43-42 at home against a determined and strong Suffield team. It was senior day, and the Wildcats were able to celebrate the 8 seniors with a victory. After being down 34 to 23 late in the second half, the Wildcats stormed back with a 20 to 5 run, sparked by some outstanding defense by Jacob Waah (Holyoke), Jaxon Axelman, Jack Mettey, Daniel Zhang, and Will Vachet (Belchertown). Highlighting the comeback was a three and steal by Axelman and a transition dunk by Vachet. 10 players scored for the Wildcats, with Vachet, Axelman, and Will Chalfant (Northampton) leading the way with 10, 7, and 7 points, respectively. Zhang led the way with 11 rebounds, including several crucial offensive rebounds. Another great team win.
Even though their shots were not falling for much of the game, the Wildcats still managed a 48-38 victory over Loomis Chaffee on the road. After a close first half with the score tied 17-17, the Wildcats started slowly in the second half trailing by as many as four points early. Will Chalfant (Northampton) then came in and sparked a 25-7 rally with several big shots, including two timely three-pointers. Jaxon Axelman and Jacob Waah (Holyoke) played great defense during the run, with Waah shutting down Loomis’ top scorer and Axelman grabbing five steals. Loomis made a run at the end, but the Wildcats finished strong by hitting six free throws to seal the game. Chalfant led scorers with 15 points, and Will Vachet (Belchertown) added 13. Daniel Zhang finished with 6 points and 12 rebounds. Another great team win!!!
The Wildcats pulled out a 67-56 victory at home against a very good Marianapolis Preparatory School team. With several players in foul trouble, a few Wildcats stepped up to lead the team to victory. Among them, Melo N’Kumbu played an outstanding game in which he scored 16 points and played aggressive defense. Omar Santoyo (Florence) also played a great offensive game scoring 12 points on 4 of 6 shooting from behind the arc. Max Kellogg (Amherst) had some timely steals in the second half and sealed the victory with four straight free throws on his way to a 12-point game. Daniel Zhang and Will Vachet (Belchertown) each added 8 points. A terrific team effort!
The Wildcats got off to a 14-0 start and never looked back on the way to a 62-26 home win over Choate Rosemary Hall. Once again, the defense was the key to victory with nine players getting steals, including two each by Alex Hershon, Omar Santoyo (Florence), and Will Vachet (Belchertown). On the offensive end, Tate Cowperthwait (Leeds) masterfully distributed the ball, setting up his teammates for some easy scores. The Wildcats also had 12 offensive rebounds to keep numerous possessions alive. The scoring was led by Vachet, Will Chalfant (Northampton), and Daniel Zhang, who had 17, 12, and 10 points, respectively. Overall, 11 Wildcats scored in what was one of the best team games of the season.
The Wildcats used a 25-3 run to start the second half on the way to a 53-34 win over Pomfret on the road. After the Wildcats jumped out to an early lead in the first half, Pomfret closed within 5 at the end of the first half. The Wildcats then ratcheted up the defense in the second half with multiple steals by Max Kellogg and Jaxon Axelman and overall great team defense. The offense started clicking too with some great passes by Tate Cowperthwait and Omar Santoyo. Will Vachet and Kellogg led the scoring with 17 and 14 points, respectively. Great team win!
On a day when the offense wasn't clicking as usual, the Wildcats still managed a 57-38 victory over Deerfield Academy on the road. Deerfield's 1-3-1 zone gave the Wildcats trouble all game, but the team overcame that with excellent defense. The Wildcats had a total of 17 steals, including five by Max Kellogg (Amherst), four by Daniel Zhang, and three by Jaxon Axelman. Zhang added seven offensive rebounds to keep many possessions alive. Leading the scoring was Will Vachet (Belchertown) who had 25 points, Axelman who had 11, and Will Chalfant (Northampton) who had 8 points. Overall, the Wildcats played a great team game.
JV boys basketball went on the road and earned a 38-33 victory against Salisbury. After a close first half, the Wildcats went on a 14 to 3 run to start the second half. Salisbury then held the Wildcats scoreless for close to 5 minutes, as they went on a 12-0 run to cut the lead to 34-33 before Jacob Waah (Holyoke) came in and shut down the Knights leading scorer. The Wildcats finished strong with Jaxon Axelman and Jack Mettey (Easthampton) sinking big free throws to seal the game. Will Chalfant (Northampton) and Mettey led the scoring with 10 and 9 points, respectively. Alex Wolter and Connor Capshaw (Southampton) made solid contributions on the defensive end. It was a gritty road win for the JV boys!
After a close first half, the Wildcats ratcheted up the defense in the second half to emerge with a 61-41 victory on the road against Suffield Academy. Will Vachet (Belchertown) led the way with 15 points, 11 rebounds, and 3 steals. Daniel Zhang dominated inside with 12 points and 9 rebounds, while Max Kellogg added 11 points, including three 3’s. The Wildcats were too much for the Tigers inside, as they kept many possessions alive with offensive boards. Jake St. Marie (East
Longmeadow) had 9 rebounds, including 6 offensive rebounds. A great team win!
The Wildcats had a big 65-34 win over rival Deerfield Academy at home. From the start, the team brought a lot of intensity in getting out to a big 18-6 lead. Deerfield fought back to make it closer near the end of the first half before Will Chalfant (Northampton) hit two big threes to stop the Deerfield run. Chalfant led all scorers with 14 and Will Vachet (Belchertown) added 11, including a fastbreak dunk early in the second half. Daniel Zhang and Melo N'Kumbu led the way on defense with several block shots.
The Wildcats jumped out to a 21-0 lead and never looked back on the way to a 62-27 victory over Berkshire. Melo N’Kumbu led the way with 12 points and played an all-around excellent game on both ends of the court. Omar Santoyo (Florence) had 7 points, Tate Cowperthwait (Leeds) had 8, and Will Vachet (Belchertown) had 10 to lead a balanced attack that saw 11 different players score. Alex Calianos (Northampton) and Max Kellogg (Amherst) made some amazing passes to set up teammates for easy scores.
The Wildcats played an all-around outstanding game in a 58-44 victory over a talented Loomis Chaffee team. Daniel Zhang was a beast inside with 11 rebounds, including 7 offensive boards, and several blocked shots. Jake St. Marie (East Longmeadow) had 8 points in the first half to help give the Wildcats a 9-point half time lead, and Omar Santoyo (Florence) had two big baskets in the second half to help fend off a run by Loomis. Will Vachet (Belchertown) led all scorers with 16 points on 8-of-12 shooting, while Will Chalfant (Northampton) chipped in 10 points.
Melo N'Kumbu, Jacob Waah, and Jaxon Axelman played stellar defense in leading the Wildcats to a 61-49 victory over Eaglebrook. The Wildcats jumped out to a quick lead on early steals and layups by Axelman. N’Kumbu and Waah helped seal the victory in the second half with great defense. Axelman led the scoring with 10 points, and Daniel Zhang, Will Chalfant (Northampton), and Max Kellogg (Amherst) each had 9 points.
The JV boys basketball team played amazing, lock-down defense in holding Berkshire to 12 points in a 58-12 win. Will Chalfant (Northampton) and Max Kellogg (Amherst) led the scoring with 10 and 12 points, respectively, while Will Vachet (Belchertown) grabbed 9 rebounds. A total of 12 players scored for the Wildcats.
