Celebrating NSFG on Campus

At this year’s Convocation, class of 2025 President Isabel Baxter-Paris ’25 harkened back to the bold vision of Sarah Whitaker and Dorothy Bement, founders of the Northampton School for Girls, and challenged her classmates to channel the spirit of the founders and be a “conscientious citizen” of their community. Watch her speech at left or read it at the link below. Later that week, at an all-school assembly, Josh Rilla, faculty dorm parent of Hathaway House, and Nikki Chambers, Dean of D.E.I.B., shared a presentation on the history of NSFG and the ways in which names, traditions, and the spirit of the school are represented on campus today. Watch a video from a school-wide assembly here, and see the presentation here or by clicking the link below.

100 Years of History

Sarah Whitaker and Dorothy Bement envisioned a school offering an education that would prepare young women for college entrance exams, not just marriage. The new place, like its founders, would operate with grace and pluck. In 1924, they welcomed the first Northampton School for Girls students. The school quickly established a reputation for academic excellence in an environment that emphasized simplicity and community. For nearly half a century, the school operated with verve, indelibly stamping the lives of women who passed through its doors and across its elegant lawns.

Today, 100 years later, the legacy of Northampton School for Girls lives on, reflected in a shared mission of a community where great teachers turn challenges into opportunities for learning, and where young women are encouraged confidently to set out and forge their own paths of individual expression.
