Meaghan Sullivan ’01 embodies the spirit of the Daniel and Jane Carpenter Award, honoring alumni whose lives reflect service, generosity, and a deep dedication to strengthening community.
A member of the class of 2001, Meaghan has remained a constant and generous presence at Williston. She has supported alumni initiatives through philanthropic leadership, served on every reunion committee for her class, and contributed her time and insight during two terms on the Head’s Visiting Council. Her connection to the school extends beyond volunteerism. In the years following her graduation from Williston and Amherst College, she returned to campus to coach the girl’s basketball program for six seasons, and more recently hosted a dinner during the inaugural Women of Williston Leadership Summit. Her continued engagement is also reflected in her membership in the Elm Tree Society.
Beyond campus, Meaghan’s impact across Western Massachusetts is both expansive and deeply personal. As the longtime owner of Joe’s Café, a Northampton institution she has led for 16 years, she has built more than a successful business. She has created a space rooted in community, generosity, and connection. Through both financial contributions and hands-on involvement, she consistently supports local nonprofits, youth programs, and arts organizations, often offering her time and talent as readily as her resources.
In 2023, Meaghan founded Katie’s Fund in honor of her dear friend Katie Lyons. The fund provides vital support to teens and young adults impacted by foster care and has already raised more than $20,000 to expand access to resources and opportunities. Her commitment to this work extends further through her involvement with Friends of Children and other organizations focused on fostering care and support for vulnerable youth.
Meaghan’s leadership also reaches into education, athletics, and the arts. She serves as the treasurer of the board for the People’s Institute of Northampton, a nonprofit dedicated to early childhood education, and has been a proud supporter of the Smith College Playmakers program, which empowers young girls through basketball and leadership development. Her generosity extends to organizations such as Historic Northampton, Northampton Arts, Young@Heart Chorus, Girls on the Run, and numerous youth sports programs, strengthening the fabric of the community in meaningful and lasting ways.
Her impact was recognized most recently when she was named the 2026 Northampton St. Patrick’s Day Parade Marshal, becoming just the ninth woman to receive this honor. In that role, she was celebrated not only with community admiration, but also with citations from local and state leaders, including U.S. Rep. Jim McGovern, Governor Maura Healey, and members of the Massachusetts legislature.
Despite these many accomplishments, Meaghan approaches her work with humility and a quiet sense of purpose. As she shared earlier this year, her guiding philosophy is simple but powerful: to do good well. It is a reflection of how she leads her life and serves her community.
