Introducing our Athletes of the Week program! Each week, Williston coaches nominate one student-athlete from their team who stood out by demonstrating our core values of purpose, passion, and integrity. These athletes show exceptional dedication, leadership, and sportsmanship, both on and off the field, embodying what it means to be a Williston Wildcat. Read below for more information on each of the Athletes of the Week.
Danny Bussard ’26 – Varsity Baseball
Danny Bussard has been outstanding this past week, leading the team both on and off the field. In a win over Pomfret, Danny recorded two hits, including a home run, setting the tone offensively. He followed that performance with another two-hit game against Pomfret later in the week, including a double, and continued his strong play with two more hits, including another double, against Salisbury on Saturday. Beyond his production at the plate, Danny has been a defensive anchor and a true leader as a captain. He consistently leads by both his actions and his voice, bringing energy, toughness, and accountability to the team every day. Danny never stops competing and fighting for his teammates, making him an invaluable presence in our program.
Keira Gould ’28 – Girls Varsity Golf
Keira Gould’28 was Williston’s medalist in the tri-match last Wednesday at Wallingford Country Club playing in adverse weather conditions to lead the team against host Choate and Hotchkiss. Keira shot par on the final hole of play to halve both her matches. On Saturday Keira once again faced adversity in the final two holes of play, dropping her match 1 down to undefeated Taft and 2 & 1 versus a strong opponent from Loomis. In her first varsity golf season, Keira has demonstrated a determined work ethic on the course and at the range. Her positive outlook and fearless approach to each shot have helped Keira shoot lowers scores each week. Keira pumps up her teammates with her energy and spirit. The team looks forward to continued success for Keira.
Will Hanford ’30 – Boys JV Lacrosse
Will has dove headfirst into his role as face-off specialist for the JV Boys Lacrosse team. (Literally!) Early in the season, Will identified his desire to learn this specific role. Every team needs someone to face off, and Will’s gritty tenacity makes him a perfect fit. No matter the situation, skill level, or size of the opponent, we can count on Will to battle for every face-off. Rarely does he get beat without a battle for the ball, which is the ultimate trait of a face-off specialist. You may lose the initial clamp on the whistle, but it’s the secondary battle where Will excels. We look forward to watching his continued development of this new skill.
Riley Stocker ’27 – Girls Varsity Lacrosse
Riley is a three-year starter on defense, and she has been a standout player and teammate since Day 1. This season, she serves as the voice of the team’s defensive unit, which has had a very strong start to the season against difficult competition. In addition to being a strong voice on the field, Riley is often tasked with covering one of the top offensive players from the other team. Riley has stepped up to that task with great success, and she did so this past week against a very talented Deerfield team. In addition to her usual defensive efforts, Riley also began to play midfield because of a team injury that has shuffled the lineup. True to her fashion, she stepped right up to the new role, quickly learned the teams offense, and scored a big first half goal to help spark the wildcats. Riley is a significant player and leader on our team, and she will be counted on considerably for the remainder of the season.
Nina Kou ’27 & Sara Xiao ’29 – Girls JV Tennis
Nina and Sara showed what true doubles tennis is all about. Their communication was constant and effective, always talking between points and supporting each other regardless of the situation. Their court positioning was excellent—they moved as a unit, covered the net with confidence, and anticipated their opponents’ shots with great awareness. On the net, they were aggressive and decisive, finishing points with sharp volleys and smart poaching. From the baseline, they were consistent and strategic, setting each other up rather than trying to do too much individually. Their serves were well-placed, and their returns put immediate pressure on their opponents, often taking control of the point from the start. Most importantly, their teamwork and chemistry stood out; they trusted each other, stayed positive, and competed with great energy and focus throughout the match. An outstanding performance in every aspect of doubles play.
Richard Yu-Hwang ’26 – Varsity Ultimate
Richard has developed his skills and mindset quickly this season to help the team be successful. During games, he is a consistent presence. He has learned to play the front wall of our defense, adding strategic concepts and adapt to the oppositions plan. On offense, he is finding the balance to let all players excel in their own role. He has become an excellent “popper” against zone defense, finding gaps and moving the disc well. When he gets fired up during practice, the rest of the team is soon to follow. I look forward to more hard work from Richard as he contributes to the team’s success.
