Athletes of the Week

Fraser Smith ’25 – Varsity Baseball
Fraser had an excellent week for the Wildcats. In Wednesday’s game against Millbrook, he went 2-4 with two RBI. He also played excellent defense at shortstop. Against WMA on Friday, he pitched four no-hit innings against the Titans, combining with Jake Smith for a no-hitter. He struck out eight and chipped in with an RBI single of his own. Fraser is as consistent as they come. He comes to every practice and game ready to compete and improve, and he is the consummate teammate with loads of respect from his teammates and the coaching staff.

Yuki Sato ’28 – Boys Varsity Golf
Yuki Sato is the only 9th-grade golfer to earn a spot on the Boys’ Varsity Golf Team this season. He comes to the team with a passion for golf and a determination to practice his skills, improve, and help us compete against some of the strongest competition in prep school golf. Yuki played his way into the first match of the season in the number 6 position to go against Westminster, Salisbury, and Suffield. On a challenging course and under difficult and very cold conditions, Yuki executed his shots and stayed focused on doing his best in the match. Despite the team falling just short of our opponents, Yuki’s score was solid and kept us close to the end. Yuki’s enthusiasm for the game and his competitive spirit will be invaluable this season as he develops and matures as a golfer.

Ze Kai Zhang ’28 – Boys JV Lacrosse
Ze Kai is only in his third week of playing lacrosse and has met the challenge head-on! During our practice before the first game, he asked if he could try playing long pole on defense. By halftime of our opening 8–5 victory against Amherst, Ze Kai looked like he had been playing defense for much longer than 24 hours. Instinctively, Ze Kai understands the fundamentals of one-on-one defense. He moves his feet well, keeps his man in front of him, and knows how to use leverage to turn his man to the outside. When the ball is on the ground, Ze Kai is fierce displaying an aggressiveness usually seen in players with much more experience. If his first week is any indication, Ze Kai will be a major contributor as the season progresses.

Kei Imai ’25 – Boys Varsity Tennis
This week we celebrate our Co-Captain Kei Imai. Kei was voted Captain because of his dedication to the team. He has put in the work, day in and day out, to reach the next level. He is the type of player who arrives early to train with the JV team before Varsity practice and will stay later just to hit a few extra shots. When playing with the JV, he encourages others to keep improving, serving as an ambassador for the Varsity squad. Kei’s play style is aggressive with heavy topspin and a huge first serve. On Wednesday, he nearly beat Cheshire’s #2 player, losing by just a couple of games and playing the best tennis of his life. We’re lucky to have someone like Kei leading our team.

Bennett Evelti ’26 – Boys JV Tennis
In the JV Boys Tennis team’s first match of the season against Eaglebrook, Bennett stepped into the number two singles slot and immediately found himself in a tight, highly contested match. Finding his groove with his first serve, he powered his way into a tiebreaker where he ultimately prevailed. Bennett has shown a strong drive to succeed in tennis, striving to improve his game by working on his second serve during practice.

James Courtney ’25 – Boys Track & Field
Throughout the winter running season and into the first two weeks of spring track, James has kept up a positive attitude and commendable work ethic. He consistently puts in a full effort on even the toughest workouts and does it with an enjoyment that clearly rubs off on his teammates. James got a chance to test his fitness at our inter-squad meet, where he ran admirably in both the mile and the 400, setting the tone for what we can expect from him later in the season. James is a natural leader on the team in effort and in attitude, both in practice and during competitions, and we’re a better team for having him as part of it!

Viktoria Valdimarsdottir ’25 – Girls Track & Field
Throughout the first two weeks, Viktoria has shown great focus and effort at practice. Each day, we can count on her to put in a full effort, and to do so with a contagious positive attitude. This was especially on display at our inter-squad meet when Viktoria jumped into the mile, and only moments after crossing the line, lined up again for the 100m dash. Of course, her effort brings results, too, and Viktoria ran admirably in both events. We can count on Viktoria to be a leader on the team, both in practice and in competition, and are thankful for her lasting contributions to the team!

Lateef Aiyeyemi ’26 – JV Ultimate Frisbee
Lateef showed up as a leader, teammate, and athlete every day since the start of the season. He is a dedicated athlete with contagious and inspiring enthusiasm for the sport. His energy on the field brings his teammates together and serves as a leader to his younger teammates. He is proactive in his efforts to place his teammates in good positions for success.

Malaya Anaba ’25 – Girls Varsity Water Polo
In just a short time, Malaya has made a huge impact on the girls’ water polo program. With only two weeks of water polo experience, Malaya quickly found herself in a starting position this past weekend and scored twice! Additionally, Malaya has been quickly learning the many aspects of the game with focused attention in practice and impressive game instincts. Even though it is early in her water polo career, Malaya has been an incredible addition to the program.
