The Williston Theatre provides the performers, technicians, and designers of the school with hands-on opportunities to practice their craft. We produce performances for the Williston community and the greater Pioneer Valley that entertain our audiences, enrich their lives, and challenge them to think about our world in a new way. In addition to our extensive extracurricular program, we offer curriculum-based acting, directing, and design classes, senior independent projects, and directed studies in acting, directing, and technical theatre.
If you love the theater but would rather work behind the scenes, there are plenty of opportunities. Stage managers control sound and lighting from the computerized control booth. Intricate sets are built in the scene shop. Whether you see yourself hanging lights or "managing the house," you can learn more about the technical aspects of theater production in both the curricular and the extracurricular program, and in some cases, through Independent or Directed Study.
The Williston Theatre
The Williston Theatre is located at 18 Payson Avenue, and it is a state-of-the-art, 288-seat performance space. Among the improvements is the new theater's flexibility; the seating and stage areas can be moved to create a traditional theater with stage, a thrust-stage, or a theater-in-the-round. The theater also boasts a fly system, high-tech computerized lighting system, upgraded sound system, and an attached scene shop directly behind the stage.
Downstairs are the theater studio (rehearsal space), costume shop, and dressing rooms. The theater is air-conditioned, which is especially appreciated during Williston's Summer Theater program.
For each production put on by the Theater Department, students are involved in everything from being on the set and lighting crew to sewing costumes, working the box office, and acting onstage. The space is also used for performances by the Dance Ensemble and the annual Middle School play.
