Health Services

Philosophy Statement
The Williston Northampton Health Center defines its role broadly with a strong emphasis on education. Our support services assist students in making personal decisions as they deal with issues such as wellness, injury, illness, sexuality, self-esteem, and other social and emotional issues.

The Health Center provides acute and chronic medical care, preventive medicine and comprehensive health maintenance, and many other health-related services for all students throughout the academic year. Students are encouraged to come to the Health Center for any injury, illness, or other health-related condition of concern.

A nurse is always on-call and available. Students should try to come to Health Center before or after classes or during a free period. They should not come during a class with a test or a paper that is due, except for emergencies or significant illness.

The school physician is available for individual appointments for boarding students. Appointments are available during office hours and the doctor is on-call after hours. In addition, referrals can be made to consulting medical and dental specialists in the local area. The Health Center will provide transportation to medical appointments, and there is a small fee for that service.

Staffing
Medical Director Peter Elsea, Director of Health and Welness Services Kerry-Beth Garvey, and Nursing Coordinator Carrie Meyers, and clinical psychologists maintain regular office hours at the Health Center and are available on call for emergencies. The center is also staffed by five registered nurses who maintain open-clinic hours daily, in the evenings, and on weekends. The nurse on duty will make appointments for students to meet with them should the need arise. Serious illnesses or injuries are treated at the Cooley Dickinson Hospital in Northampton, Massachusetts.
