Art students from The Williston Northampton School curated Joint Venture, an exhibition showcasing paintings by individuals in the Riverside Industries arts program. Joint Venture exhibited at the Grubbs Gallery in the Reed Campus Center from April 12-29, 2011, and was covered by local media outlets including the Daily Hampshire Gazette and The Republican newspapers.

Community Service Club Donates Stuffed Animals

Jimmy Connors '88 aka Jimmy Sizzles recently released a tribute concerto in honor of his mentor and teacher Yusef Lateef, 90, of Amherst, and Lateef's late wife, Tahira. "Twelve Tone Modal Chamber Concerto #1: Blues for Brother Lateef" was produced by Jimmy and renowned saxophonist Archie Shepp. A profile in Hampshire Life covers Jimmy Connors experiences in making the album.

Field Hockey Having Best Season in Over a Decade

Yesteryear's News Remembered and Honored

Val Bourque enrolled as a postgraduate student at Williston Academy in 1955. He left Williston before receiving his diploma to enroll at the newly opened United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado. In fact, as mentioned in Time Magazine, he became the first student to enroll the academy. In 1964, Val became the first Air Force Academy graduate to die in combat when his plane was shot down over Vietnam during a re-supply mission to a group of soldiers who were surrounded by the enemy. Today cadets at the Air Force Academy salute a statue of Val when they pass on parade.

Head of School Robert W. Hill III Profiled in Local Paper

Robert W. Hill III was featured in the Daily Hampshire Gazette. The profile of Mr. Hill talks about his New England roots and expresses his eagerness to begin the school-year. "The people here represent the very best in what you look for in a boarding school and the kids here are just great," says Hill.

Mr. Hill also speaks about the excellent resources the location of Williston provides in proximity to the five colleges, "...Means that we can provide a college preparatory experience that few, if any, independent schools can match," Hill said.

Mr. Hill joined Williston in July from the Carolina Day School in Asheville, NC, where he was associate head of school and principal of the upper school.

Sharp Wits Win!

Williston's Academic Team won the 49th annual televised As Schools Match Wits  state championship in June.  Williston bested Longmeadow High School for the victory at Westfield State College. 

Williston’s team prepared for the competition by practicing once a week, by participating in a tournament at Yale in March, and by narrowly losing to a faculty and administration team during Williston’s Spring Family Weekend.

As Schools Match Wits has been a fixture in Massachusetts since it was first aired on WWLP-TV in 1961. Since January 2007, the show has been co-produced by Westfield State College and WGBY-TV57; it is taped at WSC and aired by WGBY on Saturdays at 7:00 p.m. The show’s website describes As Schools Match Wits as a “fast-paced academic competition featuring some of our area’s brightest high school students.”

Williston students who participate in crew do so through a local organization known as Northampton Youth and Community Rowing. This spring, the boys' team has done very well. A Local Treat Ready for Summer

Northampton native Alex Feinstein '03 has returned to western MA to introduce fruit-covered frozen yogurt  in a new yogurt shop called GoBerry.The store is expected to open in May and is located on the corner of Main and Pleasant Streets in the center of downtown Northampton. Feinstein who owns the business with his fiancee Molly Goettsche hopes to provide a healthier alternative to ice cream this summer while using local ingredients whenever possible.

"We fell in love with it in Boston and we thought Northampton would love it, too," Feinstein told Daily Hampshire Gazette writer James Lowe.

Ashley Gearing '09 Returns for a Cause

Ashley Gearing '09 returned to Massachusetts for a brief visit from Belmont College in Nashville to raise awareness for pediatric research at the Boston Children’s Hospital, at a Battle of the Bands, Notes for the Cure event in Dedham. She performed new songs and served as a judge for a high school band competition.

“That’s really cool for me,” she said. “It’s like being a judge on American Idol and for a great cause,” who talked with the Westfield Evening News about her music career and college life. Read the full article.
Pippin Brings Laughter and Dance to the Stage

In a recent article in the Daily Hampshire Gazette Williston's production of Pippin was given top billing as a musical must-see.

Theatre Director Emily Ditkovski said she chose the production Pippin for it addresses the, "universal questions we're always dealing with no matter what age we are." As director, she makes it a priority to place students in leadership roles for the school's productions. For Pippin she assigned students as assistant directors, lighting designers, stage managers, a vocal captain, and a lighting designer.

"The theater is a place to be someone else, bring out another person who's inside of you that you never knew was there," she said. "You don't have to worry about other people judging what you're doing because everybody's in the same boat, trying to go out of their comfort zone. It's been a great experience," says Ditkovski.

With colorful costuming and excellent choreography, the musical comedy was received with high praises by audiences.

Ian Vukovich '01, a project manager at Florence Savings Bank, was named one of 40 up-and-coming business people under 40 years old by BusinessWest magazine. He and other members of the Class of 2010 were nominated by community members and business leaders, with the winners selected by a panel of professional judges.

In his role at Florence Savings Bank, Ian works with many different departments to help the bank implement new projects. He also serves as a director on the boards of several nonprofit organizations. Read more in BusinessWest.

Cyclists to Ride Across Swaziland

Al Albano '70, P'01, '03 is one of eight cyclists currently training to take a 200-mile ride across Swaziland in order to raise money for Young Heroes, a nonprofit organization based in Leeds, MA, that helps AIDS orphans in Swaziland. The group was founded by journalist Steve Kallaugher in 2006, according to the Daily Hampshire Gazette.

Graduate Gives Back to School

After graduating from UMass Amherst's School of Management, Sidney Baptista '05 deferred his start date at PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP’s Boston office in order to teach for a year at Epiphany School, the private middle school in Dorchester, MA, that he attended. Alumna Chosen as Cherry Blossom Princess

Eleanor "Nell" Etheredge '05 represented Massachusetts as Cherry Blossom Princess in the National Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington, D.C. on April 4-10, 2010, according to the Daily Hampshire Gazette.

While at Williston, Etheredge was class president. She graduated magna cum laude from Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA, with a bachelor's degree in law and policy. She currently works as a legislative policy analyst at The Council of State Governments in Washington, D.C.

The National Cherry Blossom Festival, which celebrates the 1912 gift of cherry trees from the city of Tokyo, is an annual, two-week, citywide event featuring cultural performances, sporting events, arts & crafts demonstrations and other special events. Princesses from every state and several US territories were honored at the White House, at the Japanese Embassy, in a parade, and at the festival ball.
Basketball Coach in Hall of Fame

Kevin Kudla, Williston's varsity girls' basketball coach since 2004, has been named as a member of the first Hall of Fame class for Holyoke Catholic High School in Chicopee, MA. He and the other 32 members of the class will be inducted during a ceremony on May 8, 2010.

Kudla (College of the Holy Cross ’95) coached at Indiana State, Clarkson University, and Elmira College before coming to Williston. He teaches English and also coaches in the soccer and baseball programs. During the summer, he is a consistent clinician at the Hoop Mountain Basketball Camp, the Holy Cross Basketball Camp for Girls, and the Elms College Basketball Camp.

GP Gromacki '89 Leads Winning Team

Amherst College Women's Basketball Head Coach GP Gromacki '89, whose team has made it to the NCAA Division III Final Four two years in a row, has been leading the team since 2007. He was recently named Coach of the Year by D3hoops.com. During his three seasons at Amherst, Gromacki has posted an 83-7 overall record, including a 24-3 mark in conference play.

Described in an article on WWLP.com as the UConn of Division III basketball, the Amherst College women’s team achieved the first undefeated season in Amherst basketball history this year. According to Masslive.com, the team is scheduled to take on Washington University in the Final Four on Friday, March 19.

Girls' Hockey Finds Chemistry on the Ice

In a recent article in The Republican, Williston's girls' hockey team is recognized for their successful season. The team had a 10-game winning steak until a recent loss to Westminister. This is the longest winning streak in the hockey team's history.

The girls' hockey team is coached by Christa Talbot '98 who is also the Assistant Dean of Students. She attributes the team's success to "kids whose focus is to be good teammates."

Conroy '10 hits 1,000 points on the Basketball Court

Kristina Conroy made her 1,000th point during a home game against Berkshire School on Saturday. Conroy is the fifth girls basketball player in the school's history to reach 1,000 points. She began the season with 903 points.

“She really takes her captainship seriously and does a great job bringing together the girls,” Kudla said in a recent article on Conroy in the Republican. “By nature she’s a very vocal person, but she’s also just a great leader by example,” he said.

Williston senior basketball player Kristina Conroy was recently featured in another article in the Springfield Republican for her exemplary leadership skills and competitive strength. She has seen the Williston girls' basketball team go from two losing seasons her freshman and sophomore years to two successful seasons.

Conroy says, “It taught me to face adversity and find the positives in every situation. Even though we weren’t winning, we found strength in each other. I got to know all of my teammates really well, and we were bonding every week. They were like my sisters. That’s what made us so successful last year. No one graduated my sophomore year, so we had that same group together and we were all so close, and it showed on the court,” she said.

Coach Kudla had only praise for Conroy's leadership and playing skills describing her as a "consummate competitor."

Ellen Messer '07, Outstanding Engineering Student

The University of Southern California recently recognized Ellen Messer '07 as the Viterbi Woman of the Week (vWOW). vWOW is a series that highlights an outstanding female engineer—student, faculty, or alumna. 

When asked why she is studying to become an engineer, Messer says, “I love the challenge of solving problems in a dynamic field that requires advancement and innovation in order to proceed into the future, yet relies heavily on the foundation of work done by engineers of the past.” read more

Julia Stifler '06, Volunteering Above and Beyond

Julia Stifler '06, a senior at Colby College in Maine, spends much of her time as a program leader at SETC (South End Teen Center), a safe space for teenagers in Waterville, Maine. Recently Stifler, who is an international studies major and Chinese minor, devoted a weekend taking six teens on an overnight retreat to the Leadership School at Camp Kieve in Nobleboro, Maine.

CVC (Colby Volunteer Center) Assistant Director John Perkins commented, “Julia truly went above and beyond the responsibilities of the program leader position by organizing this trip for the girls. Her extraordinary efforts show just how much she cares about the teens at the SETC and a true recognition of thinking beyond oneself.”

Kara Rainey '90 is an Angel Among Us

Kara Rainey ’90 is featured in the November/December issue of Yankee Magazine in an article about New Englanders making a difference. Rainey has volunteered for Boston’s The Home for Little Wanderers, a non-profit child and family service agency, since 2005 where she is an art teacher and organizer of field trips. Following three weeks of volunteering in New Orleans for the Red Cross after hurricane Katrina, Rainey focused on giving back to her local community. "These kids, they're surrounded by social workers, lawyers, clinicians, whose job it is to deal with them," Rainey says. "That's not my job. Nobody's paying me to be with them. Danielle Glenn '10 Winner of Junior Miss

After performing a dance number to "Fame", Danielle Glenn was named 2010 Greater Easthampton Junior Miss. "This is crazy," said Glenn, who was wearing her medallion and receiving hugs and congratulatory wishes after the show. Marcia Reed's Bear Ursa Great Spirit is Dedicated

Artist and art teacher at Williston, Marcia Reed, joined the tri-county school in the dedication of her painted bear "Ursa Great Spirit". Reed participated in the summer long exhibition of 35 bear sculptures in Bear Fest, an art event created by Easthampton City Arts to raise funds for Easthampton Schools.

Joe Hebert '71 Freestyled Vineyard Sound
9/16/2009

Joe Hebert ’71 says he never swam competitively until Williston. Recently the alumnus swam the Martha's Vineyard Sound, approximately four miles, in an hour and 37 minutes. Once he made it across, he spontaneously decided to swim back.

The water off of Martha's Vineyard is a source of sea prowlers including jellyfish and great white sharks. For support and protection, Hebert's friend and son boated alongside him, keeping watch for predators. "I was unaware that he was going to swim back," said his friend Rick Hill.

He made it back across without incident other than a few jellyfish stings.

"[At Williston] you had to do a sport. The late Dean Babcock coached the swimming team. I made the third team, but got used to swimming with guys who were very fast. It didn't take me long to make varsity," says Hebert about his swimming at Williston.

In the July 6, 2009, edition of the Daily Hampshire Gazette, Glen Swanson '64 was featured as a guest columnist in the editorial section where he  reflected on the historic similarities of the transformation of the Soviet blocked Berlin and the recent events in Iran. Laura Hall '06 beat out 12 other girls for the title of Miss Vermont. A senior at Assumption College, Hall focused on youth empowerment as her platform. She will now go on to represent the Green Mountain State at the Miss America Pageant in Las Vegas in January. Read more.

Erin Kelly-Dill '87 Recognized for Her Booming Sustainable Business

Erin Kelly-Dill was profiled in the June 5th edition of the Daily Hampshire Gazette for her expanding business located in Plainfield, MA. After years of frustration with the usage of Ziploc bags for kid's lunches, she developed a line of stylish reusable bags for sandwiches and snacks made of washable cotton with nylon interiors and a Velcro fastener. After her bags were plugged by Oprah and mentioned on CNN, orders for Kelly-Dill's SnackTAXIs exploded.

Teacher and Artist Marcia Reed Profiled

Fine Arts teacher Marcia Reed was recently profiled in the Daily Hampshire Gazette's Summit where she described her work and business practices. Marcia has been painting for more that 30 years and has a studio and gallery at One Railroad Street in Easthampton. She said her favorite aspect of working at Williston is, "just being around young people and their creative and inventive ways of looking at the world through their own art."

Williston Girls Lacrosse Bonds To Win on Field

After a 23-game winning streak, the girls lacrosse team is stronger than ever both on and off the field. Coach Jen Fulcher tells the Daily Hampshire Gazette in a recent team profile that preseason bonding and continual post-game exchanges has been key to the team's success. "I think for teams to really be quote-unquote successful, it's not just about their record," Fulcher said. "It's about how they feel about being together, what they're willing to do for each other and how they support each other. That's much more important then how many games you win."
