Information for International Students
Williston offers its international students an academic program and educational experience which is typically American in outlook, philosophy, and practice. Each year, the student community is composed of students from all over the world. In 2009-2010, there were 88 international students from 23 countries studying at Williston. Our American students come from diverse ethnic, social, and economic backgrounds, reflecting the variety of people in the United States.
Williston appeals to the international student who is willing to accept the adventure and challenge of making new friends from different backgrounds and who wants to study in an American academic setting which emphasizes individual initiative and success as well as active participation in the school community’s varied experiences from athletic teams to student activity groups.
International students have the opportunity to learn about American culture, gain fluency in English, and assimilate into the United States' educational systems in preparation for attending American colleges and universities. They also take full advantage of enrichment in the arts, athletics, community service, and extracurricular activities, leaving them both well-prepared academically and as well-rounded individuals for the challenges after high school. Many go on to attend some of the most competitive American universities and colleges.
Williston seeks academically minded students who are willing to get involved in a variety of enrichment opportunities offered as part of their life at school. All of Williston's classes are taught in English, and the school offers Intermediate and Advanced ESL. We look for young people who are outgoing and interested in learning about different cultures, and who are willing to teach us about theirs. In an effort to provide as enriching an experience as possible, the school limits the total number of students enrolled from each country in order to help students learn from new friends outside of their cultures.
Once enrolled, students have the advantage of working directly with an International Student Coordinator who guides them as they make the transition to living and learning in an American boarding school. The coordinator also serves as a liaison to parents; offers advice on academic and social issues; provides information about I-20s and other international student forms or testing; coordinates travel plans; gives support during the college application process; and organizes a special orientation for students to help them become accustomed to the campus environment and educational system. With the coordinator's support, the student can become involved and invested in multiple areas of the school as he or she gains independence in learning and living.
Our goal as a school is to create a community of students from a variety of backgrounds who can connect over common interests and talents. We work to educate all of our students, American and international, about the important role different cultures and backgrounds play in creating a positive global community.
International students interested in applying to Williston should take the TOEFL or SSAT and submit an application by February 1. Admission officers have scheduled visits in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East; however, we strongly recommend that students visit the Williston campus.
