Michael Zide and Braden Chattman, nature photography, Tuesday, April 23, 2013, 6:30 p.m.

Join Braden Chattman and Michael Zide, both instructors at the Hallmark Institute of Photography in Turners Falls, as they speak about their work, how their approaches have changed over time, and how others can explore their own authentic voices.

While Mr. Zide looks to capture what he describes as “moments of wonder in the landscape,” Mr. Chattman combines photos he takes over time to form lanscapes of his own.
“We will discuss our individual paths and processes for finding and creating our art,” Mr. Zide wrote of the upcoming lecture. “Acknowledging that the life of the artist is not a straight line is the first step to staying on the right path.”

Mr. Zide is a photographic instructor at Hallmark Institute of Photography, a workshop leader at the Maine Media Workshops, and director of Michael Zide Workshops of Western Massachusetts. He is a member of Moab Master Photographer’s Program and is a Manfrotto Mentor. His work has appeared in national and international magazines; a selection of his photographs is in the permanent collections of such museums as Amherst College’s Mead Art Museum, Mount Holyoke College Art Museum, the University Gallery at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, and the Santa Barbara Museum of Fine Art.

Mr. Chattman graduated with a BFA from Sarah Lawrence College. He co-designed and patented software for color rendering on digital cameras, and has developed his own brand of retouching portrait and fashion photographs. He is currently the head of digital imaging curriculum at Hallmark and runs Chattman Photography with his wife, Joanna Chattman.

Ron Wyatt, sports and commercial photography, Thursday, April 11, 2013, 6:30 p.m.

Join Ron Wyatt, a self-taught photographer, who was assigned by Kodak to photograph the Summer Olympic Games in Athens in 2004 and Beijing 2008, as he shares his experiences capturing memorable moments in sports. Wyatt's presentation will cover issues of interest to both professional photographers and ambitious amateurs. He will share his experience covering the Olympics and discuss equipment and camera set-up, planning a shooting strategy, and the importance of knowing the game. 

According to Wyatt's website, his “first experience with photography was an unsuccessful photo documentation of my honeymoon.” Since then, Wyatt has covered the NBA, NFL and Major League Baseball, as well as the Summer Olympic Games in Athens and Beijing. His photos have appeared in various publications such as USA Today, Black Enterprise Magazine, Time Magazine, Newsweek, TV Guide, ESPN and others. Wyatt’s Olympic work has been featured widely in publications including Studio Photography, RangeFinder Magazine, American Photo, Popular Photography and Digital Photographer UK. His corporate clients include Six Flags, Easthman Kodak, Contintntal Airlines, CVS, Pepsico, and Verizon, among others.

This is a great opportunity for family documentarians, amateurs, and professional photographers to learn about sports photography from a pro and to see images of milestone sporting events.

Claire Rosen, commercial and fine art photography, Thursday, March 28, 2013, 6:30 p.m.

Photographer and video artist Claire Rosen blends a fine art sensibility with commercial work to create whimsical imagery inspired by fairy tales, fables, and circus arts. Her work incorporates themes of vintage circus, burlesque, magic, curiosities, and natural science. 

Notable for being included in Forbes “30 Brightest Under 30” list for art and design, Rosen has been recognized by Communication Arts Photography Annual, The International Photography Awards, Graphis Photo Annual, Prix de la Photographie, The Sony World Awards, Artists Wanted: Exposure, and The Art Project: W Magazine. She has been featured in Communication Arts Insights and Fresh Profile, Creative Quarterly Journal, Direct Art, FotoTv, Friday Magazine, The Montclair Times, The Neo Collective, Photocine News and Refinery 29 “Trade Secrets”. 

Rosen's work has been exhibited widely and is included in many public and private collections and in fine art galleries including Asymmetrick Arts, Gallery 51, Ken Fulk Inc. and Verve Gallery. Her commercial clients include Alex Randall Bespoke Lighting, Alex Young, Bangz Salon & Spa, Basset & Partners, Cora Pearl Underpinnings, Juneriah International, Lleah Rae Design, Neiman Marcus, Nike Global Football, Random House Publishing and Ryan Wilde Millinery. Claire has lectured and taught courses around the world through B&H, Foundry Workshops, Gulf Photo Plus, Hallmark Institute, International Center for Photography, The New Jersey Visual Arts Center, NORDphotography, Unique University and The Yard School. Bill Diodato, commercial and fine art photography, Tuesday, February 19, 2013, 6:30 p.m.

Internationally recognized photographer Bill Diodato, a native of New England, launched his career in New York in 1990 after completing the program at Hallmark School of Photography in Turners Falls. Since then, he has developed a career as an acclaimed commercial and fine-art photographer.He has photographed for magazines including Allure, Marie Claire, Glamour, Self, New York Times Magazine, Travel & Leisure, and Interview. His commercial clients include Hollister, Clinique, Clairol, John Frieda, Biore, Victoria’s Secret, Cole Haan, Niemann Marcus, Saks Fifth Avenue, and Bloomingdales.

Diodato has received awards for his portraits, still-life, product, and fashion photography including the Cannes International Photo Festival, Graphis 100 Best in Photography, Communications Arts, the International Photography Awards, and Kodak.

Diodato’s personal projects include his first monograph, Care of Ward 81 (June 2010), which received several awards including the International Book Award. The book, with a foreword by photographer Mary Ellen Mark, documents the closed Oregon State Mental Hospital, which was the setting of the film One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. Diodato writes, “My intention in publishing these images is to present the physical crumbling and decaying cells, which represent the end of old, corrupt, poorly-run asylums and bring about a sense of closure for the women of Ward 81.” The book has been widely recognized, with articles in magazines including Esquire, Discorsi Fotografici, ASMP, and Photographer’s Forum and awards including the Eric Hoffer Book Award, Communications Arts Photography Book Award, and the PDN Photo Annual.

Emmy award-winning filmmakers Patrick and Amina Moreau, Tuesday, September 25, at 6:30 pm.

In 2005, university psychology students Patrick and Amina Moreau decided they wanted to tell meaningful stories, not through academia, but through documentaries. That initial desire shaped their development as filmmakers and was the guiding principle in the evolution of their company, stillmotion. Today, storytelling continues to guide their decisions. Every lens, color, or lighting choice is informed by the mood and emotional scene that they want to convey.

Patrick and Amina introduce the team as “a band of filmmakers and photographers who, as a rule, always let our curiosity get the better of us. We believe that the process of discovery is as important as what goes on the screen. We tell stories—big, small, and anywhere in between.” And, they say, “we’ve racked up plenty of miles and hard drive space doing work for Showtime, Callaway, CBS, NFL, and Canon.”
